This DeLorean DMC-12 has been in my family since new—purchased by my father in 1981 for $25,000. He drove it for about four years before parking it in the Florida sun, where it sat exposed for nearly five years. It was then moved into a semi trailer for long-term storage. In 2009, I pulled it out and began what would become Phase I of the restoration—though I didn’t realize it at the time. Using a totalled donor car with front-end damage, I swapped in a better-condition drivetrain and interior, and completed extensive engine and system rebuilds. The first restoration lasted through 2011, and the car was fully drivable again.
Disclaimer: This is not a photo of my actual car, but it closely resembles the condition mine was in when I began the first restoration—dusty, sun-faded, and forgotten, but full of potential.
